Four Seasons Fred Whitton Challenge app
The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is a 112 mile cycling challenge with over 3500m of elevation. Every year at the start of May, up to 2000 riders take on the challenge in the Lake District.
The event is loved by many, and the completion of the Fred route is a rite of passage for any enthusiastic cyclist. For that reason, over the years, we have seen thousands of people complete the Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge route in their own time.
The Macmillan Four Seasons Fred Whitton Challenge is your opportunity to complete the Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge route in your own time over one or more days whilst still supporting the event and our special charities.
All you have to do is download the app from the App store or Play Store, pick your date, fundraise for Macmillan or one of our other charities if you wish, start at one of eight locations on the route, ride the Fred and clock in at the same location as your start to finish. That’s all there is to it!
Please tag @fredwhittonchallenge on your Instagram posts and stories, and we will do our best to share your attempt with the Fred community.

Enjoy and be safe
We have updated the interactive map with information on all the descents and dangers on the route. Please familiarise yourself with these descents before you leave, if you have not ridden in the Lakes before take extra care.
Be aware that this is an unsupported ride, you must pack enough tools, food, water and clothing to be able to deal with every scenario that may come about.
We recommend you take a long sleeve top with you (even in summer). The weather can change on the passes and be much colder than at sea level.
Make sure you do a thorough check over your bike before you set off. Paying particular attention to the working order of your brakes.
Please note that starting a new attempt will end any existing attempts
Using the alternative route avoiding the A66 only adds on 1.23 miles
Remember…
- Wear a helmet and carry a long-sleeved wind/waterproof.
- No litter!
- We recommend using a road bike with low gears or a not-too-heavy mountain with slicks
Merchandise
- Purchase your official event jersey and merchandise from our online shop The Official Fred Shop. All pre-ordered merchandise can be picked up from the merchandise stand on Saturday or Sunday by showing a form of photo ID.
- Charity Donations
We encourage riders to donate and fundraise to our chosen charities
